As of October 5, 2023, over 8,000 cases have been filed due to Bard PowerPort complications, including blood clots, cardiac punctures, and bleeding among various other potentially fatal injuries. The company faces lawsuits alleging that particles from the device enter the bloodstream and travel to various internal organs, causing organ damage and life-threatening infections.

What is a Bard Powerport?

Manufactured by Bard Access Systems, Inc. and C.R. Bard Inc. which is owned by Beckton, Dickinson and Company, Bard PowerPort is a type of medical device (commonly referred to as a port catheter), designed for surgical implantation in the human body. It provides health care providers with direct access to patients’ veins to deliver medications, fluids, nutrition, or blood products. It is a convenient method of avoiding frequent patient contact with needles.

Common Complications Due to Bard PowerPort

  • Fracture: The catheter may break within the veins, causing pieces of it to travel throughout the body and cause internal damage to the patient. Surgery is often required to remove pieces of the catheter.

  • Migration: The catheter may become dislodged and lead to failure of the device, causing serious injury to the patient.

  • Infections: When the catheter breaks down over time, small cracks that form on the device can allow bacteria and other pathogens to enter the body.
